Laver

Laver belongs to bangiaceae of rhodophyta family, and often called haejo (from marine algae) or haetae in Korea. It grows like mosses sticking to the rocks in the sea. It has an average length of 14-15cm and width 5-12cm. Its body has a long oval shape or egg shape with wrinkles at the edges of it. Upper body is in red brown, lower bluish green. Laver consists of single layer cells with the shape of irregular triangle, square or polygon, being put together irregularly.

A cross section has rectangular shape and its height is longer than width.  The cell at lower part is like an egg or oval shape, producing a big colorless rhizoid.

It appears in the coast of Korea around October, breeding in the winter to spring time, before it diminishes to vanish in summer. It is distributed in Korea (Jeju Island, South coast and West coast), Japan, China, etc.
