Horse Mackerel is a shoal fish, which spawns during summertime in the free water masses. Most of the time you can see horse mackerel spawns swimming between the sea nettles treads.
During winter it eats a lot of small spices that lives on the sea bottom and in the summertime it lives mainly on (free) swimming plankton and spawn.
Horse Mackerel is a warm-water fish. It is located almost all over the east Atlantic from South Africa to Iceland and Norway, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Horse Mackerel arrives at the coast of Norway during spring, and return south when autumn comes. One can spot the fish from the surface and down to around ca. 100 metres deep.
Appearance: Horse Mackerel got its name from its 70-80 spiked scales along its body, which is long and slim. It has an underhung jaw, and a bluish back with silvery sides.
Length max: Around ca. 40 cm, but a length up to ca. 60 cm can occur.
Weight max: Around ca. 1.5 kg
