Shellfish

The shellfish are sampled regularly in order to ensure that they are of good quality. Mussels are usually sold fresh and can be kept for about a week. Mussels are a familiar and popular food in Europe; in fact, far more mussels are consumed than salmon. For this reason, we expect to see a significant growth in the shellfish farming industry in the future.

The mussel farming industry is relatively new, and new technology in the areas is continuously being developed. Mussels are not fed, but live on natural populations of algae in the sea. Now and again these algae contain substances that are toxic to human beings. When that happens, harvesting has to be postponed until the mussels have eaten themselves "clean" again.

Mussel (Mytilus edulis) farming is a steadily growing industry, and this represents the most advanced sector of shellfish cultivation. Mussels are grown on horizontal systems of ropes suspended in the water by buoys. From these ropes hang tapes to which mussel larvae attach themselves and on which they grow to harvesting size in the course of about two years.
