Lately there has been considerable improvements in the production of pepper by virtue of research and development conducted by government aided research organisations. A number of new hybrid varieties have been developed which produce good yield per acre, and are better in their spice value. The first hybrid product in the world named Panniyoor I was developed in Kerala by cross pollination of two traditional varities namely Cheriya Kaniyadan and Uthiran Kottah. This new variety is the best among all with a Volatile Oil Content of 5.2% and 11.8% of Oleoresin (in which there is 5.2% of piperine alkaloid) .
