According to an unwritten legend, Bokbunja ( in Chinese characters means Evacuation, Night stool and Son respectively), there lived an old married couple in Mt. Seonun. They had a son, but he was weak and unwell all of the time. The couple tried giving their only son a wide variety of medicines , but he never got better.

One day, a monk from Mr. Seonun said, "If you give wild black raspberries to your son, he will get healthier." The couple gave wild black raspberries to their son as the monk said. Surprisingly, it was said that the son got better and a night stool was evacuated whenever he urinated.

Therefore, the black berries are named as Bokbunja( ), which means that a night stool is evacuated whenever the son urinates. Media since there was a scene featuring young Janggeum put Bokbunja berries in her ailing mother to save her in "Daejanggeum", which was explosively popular in all of South East Asia including Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China, the Japanese have become increasingly interested in Bokbunja.
