The first minimum requirements introduced were that each dog, before it was allowed to be used for breeding, had to be identified by a permanent tattoo number in the ear, had to pass an official hip dysplasia test and to receive a grading of at least a "G" (Good) from a qualified breed judge. In addition bitches had to be at least 20 months old and males at least 24 months old. In order to receive the "G" grading a dog has to be free from disqualifying faults, may not be afraid of a gun-shot and has to pass a basic temperament test.
One of the organisation's earliest direct aims, and an aim to which it has remained true, was that all breeding of German Shepherd Dogs had to be controlled and subjected to minimum standards.
The federation demands that all breeding within the organisation takes place within the framework of international control and co-operation, based on the direction given by the country of origin which is Germany.
Aims of the Federation (As taken from Animaltalk July 2002):
We are members of the German Shepherd Dog Federation of South Africa and we associate ourselves with its aims.
It is no small wonder that German Shepherd Dog has become the most popular breed in the world and we are privileged to be associated with this wonderful breed.
