Five decades ago, the `Iron Man of India' Shri Vallabhbhai Patel called for the formation of milk co-operatives to carry on the milk business. Inspired by the call, the suggestion was
spontaneously taken up, adopted and implemented by late Shri Tribhuvandas K Patel and Dr V Kurien - the `Father of the White Revolution'. Together, they nurtured the concept of
co-operatives and as a sequel to their efforts, what we behold today is an organization of international repute. It is the continual support we received from our fellow co-operators that
has realized this dream into a reality. Even after 58 years down the line, the benefits and the advantages of the movement are still evident. As you all know, there has been tremendous change in the world milk market scenario in the past decade. This has influenced dairy industry of India as well. Therefore, I feel it appropriate to up-date myfellow cooperators on some of the interesting facts about the industrial scenario. The daily milk production globally has touched 1650 million litres. Owing to White Revolution, India is placed at the first position in the world, in terms of milk production. However, in comparison to milk production per animal in other countries, in India, the yield per milch animal is the lowest. When we look around internationally, a small country like Israel is a leader, producing 31 litres milk per animal, adopting most advanced technology in dairying and animal husbandry practices. Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands and other milk producing countries toe behind. As far as peranimal milk production is concerned, we are placed at the bottom of milk producing nations. Though the number of milk producing animals is far less, the other nations are ahead in terms of qualitative and quantitative milk production. To me, it appears that though we have been in the business for such a long period, increased efforts need to be put to improve the calving of milch animals, to nurture them to make high yielding animals to produce milk of international standard. Around the world, people are realizing the benefits milk and milk products bring-in, and thus, the rise in demand of dairy products Taking advantage of relatively liberal government norms, multinationals have entered into our domestic market and chipping away what used to be our market share. In the face of this stiff competition and its consequences in milk business, endowed by the organizational unity and skill, we are capable of confronting the issues and commit ourselves to maintain our position as world leaders in milk production. With your support, we shall never stop and never fail in our mission. |
