The Martorana Fruit is made with Marzipan; the main ingredients are sugar and almonds. Originally in Sicily it used to be accompanied with fresh fruit to make the children happy. It is said that in Palermo at the Martorana convent, from which arrives the origin of its name, the nuns were waiting for the visit of an illustrious prelate and to decorate the garden they thought of replacing all the fruits that had already been picked with the marzipan sweets that had the shape and colour of oranges, mandarins and lemons: it was a great success. Afterwards, thanks to the fantasy and cleverness of the Sicilian confectioners many other very colourful shapes were made. The Martorana fruit is one of the typical sweets that is used to make very colourful baskets to give as gifts for special occasions or to send abroad as a present of sweets.
