TYPES OF TEA

Tea grading is one of the most complicated and misunderstood subjects. It is often misunderstood because of number factors.

Fanning 1(F1)-Forms about 3-4% of the production. This is a mixture of black tea and large amount of smallish cut fibres often sifted out of the primary grades. The teas are quite useful in tea bags due to its quick brewing, strong flavour and good colouring qualities.

CTC- (CUT, TEAR & CURL)
PRIMARY GRADES
Broken Pekoe 1(BP1)-Forms about 12-14% of the total production and has the largest size particles. Liquors are light in colour but have an encouraging flavouring characteristic.

Pekoe Fanning 1(PF1)-Forms the bulk of the production about 58-60% and made up of black grainy particles slightly smaller than the BP1.

Pekoe Dust (PD)-Forms 10-12% of the production, often black and finer than the PF1 and has thick liquors and aroma.

Dust 1(D1)-Forms about 4-6% of the production and is made up of the smallest particles and characterized by strong liquors.

SECONDARY GRADES
Dust (D)-Made up of tiny bits of broken leaf often used to brew strong tea.

Broken Mixed Fanning (BMF)-Fibrous lots with very little trace of black teas.

Kenya Black Tea is sold in weekly (Tuesdays) auctions in Mombasa, KENYA and then prices for the week are released. For example; on Sept. 22, 2009,  Auction Prices for Ndima Tea Factory were as Follows:- Grade BP1- US$ 3.70/Kg, Grade PF1 - US$ 3.44/Kg, PD - US$ 3.70/Kg and D1 - US$ 3.60/Kg. There are 57 Tea Factories which offer such various grades for auction.

Black Orthodox Tea is also available at US$ 4.68/Kg FOB MOMBASA for Grades STD1 (Broken Leaf), STD2 (Whole Leaf) and FOP (Large Whole Leaf).

Kenya Black Tea is packed in Bulk multiply paper sacks with poly lining in lots of 62 Kg or 68 Kg packages and palletized in lots of 20 packages per pallet for containerization as per ISO 9884 specifications. A 20 Ft/40 Ft container accommodates about 12.4 -15MT/25 MT respectively.

Minimum Order Quantity: 1x20 FT FCL of 200x62Kg = 12,400 Kg or 200x68 Kg=13,600 Kg.
