We are among the largest producers of tea in the country with a workforce of 40000 (including all categories). Together our 17 estates spread over 50000 acres in Assam, produce close to 25 million kilograms of tea (peak crop). Operations in tea are directed through two premier tea companies, Apeejay Tea Limited and Empire & Singlo Tea Ltd. Dating back over a 100 years, they are amongst the oldest tea companies in India. Apeejay Tea, formerly Assam frontier Tea Ltd established in 1889. Empire & Singlo is the merged entity following the amalgamation of Empire Plantations (India) Ltd. established in 1863 and Singlo (India) Tea Co. Ltd established in 1864. In 2005, the Group acquired Typhoo, UK's third largest tea brand and an over 100-year-old iconic British brand. This was India's second largest global FMCG acquisition and the 7th biggest corporate takeover by an Indian company, to date. It gives us significant opportunity to vertically integrate our tea business as well as expand our footprint in international markets. London Fruit & Herb, Heath & Heather, Melroses and Ridgeways among others were also acquired from Premier Foods UK. Quality consciousness pervades all our operations and efficient process control has enabled us to stay competitive and provide value to our customers. Most of our teas were earlier sold domestically through the auction sale system. Over the last three years, we have begun to sell a large proportion of our teas directly . We constantly innovate to stay in tune with changing world tastes and a reflection of this is our increased focus on premium, high-grade teas, launch of our domestic retail brand "Mantra" and the inclusion of organic tea in our products on our online tea boutique www.teastall.com. It is our pride to place three of our single estate teas - Sessa, Pengaree and Khobong - on the prestigious Harrods shelf in London and other premium tea boutiques including our own. At our online tea boutique, we provide to the discerning connoisseur the opportunity to buy some of the world's most exquisite teas - from the rolling hills of the Himalayas to the Oriental flavours of the Far East down to the wild plantations of Africa - selected by our tea tasters. Great emphasis is also laid on the development of direct exports. Our client list includes of major buyers in UK, Germany, Russia, Iran and Pakistan and we have also transacted business with Canada, Ireland and Netherlands. Apeejay Typhoo Tea Private Limited is our Delhi based marketing, sales and production wing with an international standard machinery and processessing unit in Kolkata.In April 2008, Standard Black Tea, Flavoured Tea and Fruit Infusions from the Typhoo UK Product basket have been introduced in select markets in North India. Tea is a labour intensive industry and our driving objective has been to improve living and working conditions for our large workforce and their 100,000 dependants.
