5-Hydoxytryptophan, or 5-HTP, is a naturally occurring amino acid that is extracted from Griffonia Seed. This amino acid is a chemical precursor as well as a metabolic intermediate step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical, serotonin. It is widely used a dietary supplement for use as a treatment for conditions cause by the lack of serotonin in the human brain.

5-HTP is used for sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, migraine and tension-type headaches, fibromyalgia, binge eating associated with obesity, attention deficit disorder (ADD), and as adjunctive therapy in seizure disorder and Parkinson's disease. Taking 5-HTP seems to significantly improve symptoms of depression, including in patients with treatment-resistant depression. There is evidence that 5-HTP might be comparable to the conventional antidepressants fluvoxamine and imipramine (Tofranil). 5-HTP appears to improve symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain severity, morning stiffness and sleeplessness.

Some people taking 5-HTP have reported experiencing eosinophilia and eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS). 

5-HTP could induce nausea, vomiting and other minor GI disturbances such as abdominal cramp, pain and diarrhea. Other rare adverse effects include mild and transient fluctuations in blood pressure, headache and palpitations.

5-HTP should not be used by those with heart disease, coronary artery spasm, carcinoid tumors, uncontrolled hypertension and any other significant cardiovascular disease.

It is recommended to take less than 50 mg in the evening to avoid or reduce nightmares. Some people may find 10 to 30 mg works better.
