Function: The two most important bioactive constituents in Magnolia bark are magnolol and honokiol, two phenolic compounds. In scientific studies, Magnolia bark was found to have anxiety reducing effects, to enhance steroid production, to reduce pain and inflammation, to inhibit fungal and bacerial growth, and to increase acetylcholine levels in the brain. In reducing anxiety, honokiol was found to be five times stronger than Valium, but without the side effects. Magnolia bark may further be a potential remedy for Alzheimers disease as it shows powerful effects on acetylcholine levels in the brain. The corticosteroid effects of magnolol may help relieve asthma. In several studies, Magnolia extract was tested on human cancer cells and it was shown that it has the function to inhibit the growth of cancer tumors. And, finally, Magnolia bark can also be used as a topical agent, for instance in dental care or for analgesic muscle rubs.
