Mark Twain wrote that a report of his death has
been greatly exaggerated.
The same can be said of the situation of public libraries in the country.
When the e-books arrived, many people predicted that
libraries go the way of the stone tablet. But that's
not the case. In fact, library use is stable or even increased
throughout the country, according to the American Library Association.
Locally, the Huntley Area Public Library recently
announced that it had established a fiscal year's record for the number of library visitors.
The area of Algonquin Public Library was recently named as one of the libraries of STAR U.S. and is ranked 18 in Illinois for visits per capita.
Part of the success of these libraries, as well as others in McHenry County, no doubt was due to a concerted effort to offer programming that appeals to
the entire community. And they have embraced the same technology that was
supposed to be his undoing.
For example, the library has added Huntley Nook and
Sony e-readers that are available for purchase. It also has games
Wii, PlayStation3 and Xbox360.
Algonquin Library offers a mobile application allows customers
to download three songs mp3 per week using Freegal.
