Sulfuric acid also known as vitriol, is a mineral acid composed of the elements sulfur, oxygen and hydrogen. most of this amount is consumed for fertilizers, particularly super-phosphates, ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfates. The rest of it is used in chemical industry for production of detergents, synthetic resins, dyestuff, pharmaceuticals, petroleum catalysts, insecticides and antifreeze, as well as in various processes such as oil well acidifying, aluminum reduction, paper sizing, water treatment. Other uses included of pigments and paints, enamels, printing inks, coated fabrics and paper, production of explosives, acetate and viscose textiles, lubricants, non-ferrous metals, and batteries.
