ZJ series slurry pump seal failure can be divided into initial type, wear type or random type. Statistically speaking, random failure, also called accidental failure, is the main type. Initial failures are usually caused by incorrect seal selection, installation or startup, and with the widespread application of cartridge-designed mechanical seals, initial failures have actually been basically eliminated.

Random failures tend to occur unexpectedly after a considerable period of operation and are typically characterized by a rapid change in seal leakage behavior from normal to excessive. Under operating conditions, this may manifest as a change from an invisible leak to a trickle in high pressure or high speed applications, or from a steady trickle to a small leak. Random failures are difficult to predict because they are often the result of transients caused by process operations or equipment, which the sealing surface material cannot tolerate. Transient operating conditions can be caused intentionally, or they can be the result of component failure or unexpected process deviations in the pump. Verifying that the seal can handle the expected transients is a critical step in the mission assessment, as transient conditions are likely to have a damaging effect on the sealing surface. Continuous in nature, steady state applications are relatively easy compared to cyclic applications. In fact, it is safe to assume that if the lubricant film at the sealing surface remains stable at all times, the sealing surface will remain intact almost permanently, and therefore the seal will not be the driving factor in the equipment's service life.
