Beam splitters:
When a light beam is incident onto a surface inclined at an angle of incidence to the incoming beam, the reflected and transmitted light becomes partially polarised. This can be resolved into two components defined as s and p polarisation. This effect of an inclined surface can be utilised to efficiently split randomly polarised light into s and p polarisation states. An ideal solution for this is polarising cube beams splitters where interference coatings are applied to a surface within the cube inclined at 45 degrees to the incoming beam. By use of different designs, the transmitted beam becomes p-polarised whereas the reflected beam at 90 degrees to the incoming beam becomes s-polarised.
